A Chinese Supplier With Only a Mobile Number and WeChat? Here's What It Actually Means

You've been chatting on WeChat for three weeks. The 'sales manager' is friendly, prices are decent, samples looked fine. But when you ask for a company landline or a 400 hotline, the answer is a shrug. That absence tells you more than most other signals combined.

What real Chinese factories actually have

A registered corporate landline in the same city as the business licence. Often a 400-XXX-XXXX customer hotline (China's equivalent of a US toll-free line — costs about RMB 500/year for a real business). A registered corporate WeChat Work account. A company email on a domain that matches the website. Every mid-size and large factory has at least three of these.

The phone number hierarchy

Personal mobile (13X, 15X, 17X, 18X, 19X): identifies a human, not a company. WeChat personal: same. WeChat Work (企业微信): tied to a real registered company. 400 or 800 hotline: unambiguously corporate. Landline (010-, 021-, 020- etc.): corporate, city-tied. If your supplier only has personal mobile and personal WeChat, they may still be legitimate — but the burden of proof is on them.

Why mobile-only suppliers exist

Some are genuine one-person trading operations. Some are factory sales reps who freelance on the side (fine for the sample, bad if you wire to their personal account). Some are middlemen dressed as factories. And some are scammers who never registered a company at all. The pattern doesn't tell you which, but it should push you to verify the entity before you pay.

The 5-minute verification

Ask for the business licence. Search the Unified Social Credit Code on GSXT. If the company exists, ask the supplier to make the next call from the registered landline — a real employee can do this in five minutes. If they can't, they're either not employed by the company they claim, or the company doesn't exist.

WeChat account types

Personal WeChat is anonymous by design — Real-Name registration exists but the counterparty can't see it. Official Accounts (公众号) require corporate registration. WeChat Work (企业微信) is tied to a licence. A supplier who insists on personal WeChat for a $50,000 order, and refuses the corporate alternatives, is telling you what to worry about.

When mobile-only is fine

Sub-$500 sample orders. Consumer imports where you're covered by chargeback. Or ongoing relationships where you already verified the company two years ago and now message the same sales rep. First-time B2B orders above $5,000: never on a mobile number alone.
